AT&T is pushing a bill (AB 2395) in the California legislature that would allow it to phase out landlines starting in 2020 if there is an alternative, like cell phones, available to customers.

The idea is already receiving push back from consumer advocates, with some saying it is purely a cost-saving measure and has little to do with modernization. They also worry that it could prove disastrous during times of emergency, when there’s no electricity available to charge a cell phone.
